Grantham

The origin of the surname Grantham is uncertain, although it is said to probably be Old English, meaning “grand.”  The surname had its beginning with the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. “Granta+ham” meaning “Granta’s Village” appeared as early as 1086 in the Domesday Book in its present form.

Grantham, is a town located in the County of Lincolnshire.  The first documented Grantham families can be found there where they were said to have held a family seat from very ancient times – some researchers say well before the Norman Conquest.

Our Grantham family research focuses on:

  • Edward Grantham (1643-1704) and wife Elizabeth – Known as Old Edward – plantation owner near Jamestown, Virginia
  • Edward Grantham II (1686-1768) and wife Katherine Proctor – settlers near the Neuse River in North Carolina
  • John Grantham (1725-abt 1781) and wife Ann Brown
  • William Grantham (1753-1800) and wife Rhonda
  • William M. Grantham (1783-1863) and wife Susannah Richardson
  • Jesse Richardson Grantham (1833-1904) and wife Susan Adeline Parks – Texas pioneer
  • Hillard Cisero Grantham (1854-1939) and wife Margaret Dickson
  • George Washington Grantham (1877-1954) and wife Beulah Viola Rogers

Hi, My grandmother was a Grantham (in Alabama) and I am very interested in sharing information with you. I have had arm surgery and will be a sling for the next six weeks. As soon as I can type, I will get my information to you as typing left handed is a very long process.

Good evening, Your post on the Curbow – Montoya web site is dated 2011. At this writing it is 2016, but I am taking a chance in trying to reach you. My gggg grandfather is Nathan Grantham who died in Henry County Alabama. Are you related to him?

Thank you for stopping by the blog and taking the time to leave your question. I have searched my database and it does not include a Nathan Grantham. My husband’s grandmother was a Grantham. Her grandfather left Union County, Georgia either during or at the end of the Civil War. They settled in Texas. I am sure that there is a connection – but I just don’t know how or where. Good luck on your family history research! Best regards, Judy

In fact the same exact Chaplin Charles Harris family that assisted in William Henry Lytle, Jr. burial after the devastating tornado.
