Jesse (or Jess) Richard Grantham was the second son born to Hillard Cisero Grantham and Margaret Dickson and the younger brother to my husband’s gg-grandfather George Washington Grantham. He was born in Hill County, Texas on 18 Dec. 1880. Based on the census records it appears that he was single and lived with his parents until at least the age of 30. He was listed as a farm laborer both in the 1900 and the 1910 census.
He was probably married by at least 1919 when he filled out his World War I Draft Registration Card – and where he lists Mrs. J.R. Grantham as his next of kin. On the draft registration card he lists his name as Jesse Richardson Grantham but later signs the card as “Richard.” He describes himself as being of medium height and build; blue eyes and dark hair. He is deemed “unfit for military service – due to being crippled since childhood.”
In the 1920 census we see that Jesse has married. He is indexed as “Jess Grantham,” age 42, born 1878 in Texas. He is married and living with wife Jane M., age 35. Jess states that he can read/write and that he owns his own home free of mortgage. The couple is living next door to older brother George Washington Grantham. Also nearby is the family of Eugene Columbus Atwood.
Jesse’s wife is Jane M. O’Shields (1883-1937), the oldest daughter of William D. O’Shields and Mary C. Hodge. It is believed that Jesse Grantham and Jane O’Shields did not have any children.
Jess Richard Grantham died at the young age of 46 on 8 Feb. 1927 of appendicitis. He is laid to rest in Tecumseh Cemetery, Taylor, County, Texas.
